We have selected two Alton homes with solid walls to receive free insulation. You can follow the progress of the families involved and their homes.
Working through partner organisations Energy Alton identified a number of local homes with solid walls and invited the owners to put their names forward for a draw to win the free insulation. Following the draw the homes were surveyed to ensure that solid wall insulation would be appropriate and the owners informed of their win. All the homes entered into the draw have been offered a free Home Energy Survey which could help them to save up to 15% of their energy. You can sign up for a free Home Energy Survey for your home.
Homes built before 1920 usually have solid walls, rather than cavity walls. Cavity walls are made of two layers with a small gap or ‘cavity’ between them, trapping warm air inside but solids walls have no such gap, and so let more heat through.
Insulating a home with solid walls typically costs anything between £4,000 and £15,000. But Energy Alton has been able to fund these homes for free through our government grant.
The good news is that insulating solid walls can cut heating costs considerably and it’s a job that can be done from the inside or the outside. We have chosen one home which will benefit from internal insulation and one which will be helped more by external insulation.
We successfully completed insulation of two solid wall properties in Alton, one with external insulation and one with internal insulation. We are now monitoring the impact of the work and the effect on comfort and fuel bills. Each of the home owners will keep track of their energy bills for 12 months and we’ll let you know how they get on.
We will have a further open days during 2013 and we’ll use our experience to work with Energy Companies to insulate more solid wall homes in 2013.
